TastEd – Sensory food education

TastEd offer teachers support, training and resources to deliver a range of simple taste education lessons tailored to the English National Curriculum. In a typical TastEd lesson – which requires no kitchen or fancy equipment to teach – a teacher brings fresh vegetables or fruits into the classroom. The children talk and write about what they see, smell, touch, hear and taste and whether they enjoy it or not.

TastEd lessons are based on the Sapere method, which has been used with great success in many European countries for decades. Taste education is food education pared down to its simplest form, but the impact on the way children relate to food can be huge.

Digital Food Education: An Erasmus Partnership

Digital Food Education helped teachers integrate digital tools into food education while developing pupils’ digital and ICT skills.

The Coronavirus pandemic prompted partners in Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and the UK to adapt quickly. They introduced innovative digital approaches, supporting schools and teachers in transitioning to remote and blended learning.

The project demonstrated how tools like video creation and livestreaming could enrich lessons, connecting pupils with global resources and making learning more engaging.

By building teachers’ digital confidence, the initiative ensured food education remained accessible during the pandemic while preparing students for a technology-driven future. Digital Food Education successfully supported schools in overcoming challenges and creating flexible, inclusive learning opportunities.

 

Learn4Earth: An Erasmus Partnership

Learn4Earth was an interdisciplinary project focused on developing innovative, hands-on learning activities. We used Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to create Teaching Manuals that were collected in the Learn4Earth Handbook. These manuals were shared with educators and students to promote sustainable practices.

To ensure the project’s success, we organized:

  • Learning/Teaching/Training Activities: Workshops and collaborations to develop new teaching materials.
  • Multiplier Events: Public events to share our findings and engage with stakeholders.

By combining these efforts, we aimed to create a lasting impact on environmental education.

The School Meals Service (SMS): Past, Present and Future

Through a combination of historical and ethnographic approaches, this ESRC-funded project aimed to uncover the impact of the School Meals Service on schools, communities, and families from its inception in 1906 up to the present day. The research sought to explore how this vital service influenced the daily lives and experiences of those it touched, providing insight into its role in shaping educational settings, family dynamics, and community wellbeing.

The study delved into the lived experiences of individuals directly connected to school meals, including recipients, teachers, parents, and catering staff, both in historical contexts and more recent times. By gathering and analysing their perspectives, the project sought to uncover valuable lessons about the service’s successes, challenges, and evolving significance. These insights aimed to inform future strategies and policies, ensuring the School Meals Service continued to serve its communities effectively while adapting to changing needs and circumstances.
